For the most part it was a travel day for us. We arrived at the area in the evening hours and after dinner the five passengers on board tried their hand at catching some squid. No tuna today, but we did land one dorado, which didn't make it alive to the fish well so instead he was put to good use in the galley.

We got away from the dock today with John O'sullivan and his crew from Monterey Bay Aquarium. We will be searching for oceanic white-tip sharks, dorado, small yellowfin and pilot fish. We will be far offshore for the next ten days, wish us luck.

It was a travel day here. With only 220 miles to go we will be getting to the area tomorrow in the afternoon. The weather is OK with 10 to 12 knots of NW breeze.

The weatherman hit the nail on the head. Storm clouds gathered up and dumped rain upon the Shogun. The albacore responded by staying down, out of sight for most of the day. Once again in the last hour of daylight the fish wanted to bite. Bruce put us on a few schools and we managed to put fish on the boat. Right now we are headed for the storm once again as it is between us and home. Tomorrow we are changing gears, preparing for a 10 day tagging and research trip with our friends from Monterey Bay Aquarium. The swim step goes on along with other equipment designed for trip. Returning in October we continue with the fall fishing trips, targeting tuna, wahoo, dorado and yellowtail to name a few. Why not call the office as there are still a few spaces available for these trips. Hope to see you aboard.

A banner day aboard the Shogun, Today we made up for yesterdays weak action. The day started with a gray bite in calm seas. After that there were a few hours with little action. Sunny skies and light breeze helped locating fish. We had several good stops on bird schools and foamers but the crazy bite was when Bruce found a school on the sonar that stayed with the boat for a while. Every bait was a guaranteed bite for a. Hot stick Elliot Tanaguchi managed to boat 4 albacore on the butterfly jig. A squall line on the radar and lightning flashes out west signal an approaching storm, but the wind isn't expected till tomorrow afternoon. We hope to get on a few more biting schools of albies before we have to start back to San Diego.

Today more than made up for yesterday in that fish bit well in beautiful weather. Its as simple as that. This morning we started the day with a gray bite in flat calm seas. With a handful on board we began to look for more albacore. The conditions including sunny skies and a light breeze made for great visibility. There were a few slow morning hours then all afternoon there were large spots of albacore high and dry feeding on bait. Foamers and bird schools produced several good stops but it was the deeper sonar marks that went wild for hooked bait. Hot stick Elliot Tanaguchi managed to boat 4 albacore in one stop,all on the butterfly jig. BBQ spare ribs and banana splits for dinner capped off a day for the books. But all good things must come to an end. A squall line on the radar and lightning flashes out west signal the approaching storm. Heavy winds aren't expected until tomorrow afternoon, so we should get a few more tries at the albies tomorrow morning. Then its a slow cruise back to San Diego.

Today was a long slow day out on the pond. We spent the day looking high and low for albacore, the wind came up some but these were workable conditions. Bruce came across a school that produced bluefin, and late afternoon a bird school cooperated for a handful of albacore. We also had a marlin dancing on the troll for a few minutes. Tomorrow we are going to tough it out in the same area, maby the Shogun will get lucky and start out the day with an albie gray bite. This is the last of our shorter summer trips. The Shogun will be changing gears, beginning our 10 day fall trips soon. Sure would be nice to wrap up the season with a big score.

From June through Thanksgiving, the Shogun never rests. Back out today on a four day trip. Bruce is running the boat and he has us pointed back out to the albacore. Jackpot on the last trip was a 36# albie and we hope to do better than that. Looking out at calm seas it's easy to be optimistic. Those rough days are hard on both the boat and crew. We hope to find the fish how we left them late last night, eager to bite. Best case scenario is we throw on a wad of longfins then Bruce studies his options such as Guadalupe, San Martin or Cortez Bank. The Shogun will be in position around midnight, drifting till first light then its game on once again trying to locate a biting school. 30# gear, a 2/0 - 3/0 hook, and a lively sardine is the equipment list for tomorrow.
