Offshore style fishing was the order of the day today. There was very little action for most of the day. A single bluefin on the troll and one stop for an albacore jig strike and a handful of bait fish that followed. Todays pictures include a shot of a classic circle hook set featuring ringedhooks.com, one of Bruce's tackle sponsors. We finished out the day looking for yellowtail on the kelps until heavy fog closed in. Several yellows to 18# were landed on live bait and jigs. The Shogun will be at Cedros Island early tomorrow morning. Fishing has been up and down lately, we hope to be there on the up swing.

Fishing conditions are slowly improving on the local banks. We had a few jig strikes today, one spot that came to the boat and bit well but not a long lasting bite. Dense fog was with us all day, so spotting jumpers at a distance was out. At sunset we ran in to another spot of albacore in a new area giving us hope that more fish are moving into the area every day. Tomorrow we depart on our first of many 5 day trips this season. Bigfishhappen.com is the sponsor and there are many familiar faces coming out. Promises to be a good start to the summer season.

Outbound once again, the Shogun is on a 5 day trip sponsored by Bigfishhappen.com. Our own Capt. Bruce Smith has lined up product samples for the passengers, and we are rigged and ready for tomorrows action. Bruce gave the group a comprehensive seminar covering fishing techniques and a general run down of operations aboard the Shogun. His tips were appreciated as there are severa lnovice father son pairs on this trip. For those that are new to this style of fishing this trip is a great atmosphere to learn and succeed.
Aside from our crew there are many regulars aboard who are also eager to lend a hand to the newcomers. Who know perhaps in the future this trip will develop into a great opportunity for those who have interest can come out and not be intimidated. After a great meal we are now running south in calm seas toward tomorrows offshore location. There are boats in the fleet fishing an area of mixed tuna, we hope to find biting bluefin, yellowfin, and albacore. There is great opportunity for a variety of locations and species, who knows, this might be the week that the fishing busts wide open!

The Shogun has once again baited up and cleared Point Loma in search of biting fish. There are once again reports today of a lucky boat and albacore catches in the teens so we are going to concentrate on the same local grounds as the other day. Lets hope tomorrow is an up day as we are on a 1 1/2 day trip and have just one shot at putting together a catch. This Friday we begin our summer schedule of 5 and 6 day trips. Check out the schedule and give the office a call, we'd love to see you at the rail tied onto a pole bender!

If I hadn't seen an albacore jumper this afternoon I'd have called it a snipe hunt. Dry kelps and very little sign of life as we chased the specter of the elusive albacore all afternoon. A few yellows were landed but the longfins wouldn't bite. Spirits remained high and the group enjoyed fair seas and each other's company. By late afternoon the Lakers and the Celtics garnered more attention than the trolling rods. The Shogun will be back out tomorrow evening on a 1 1/2 day trip. Soon a big wad of fish will move into local waters and bite. Could be any day now, and the whole San Diego fleet will be churning up prop wash.

Today we spent the day offshore looking and looking... The kelps were for the most part dry, a dozen yellowtail from 8 to 18 pounds made it to the RSW well. This afternoon we were surprised with a couple of blind jig strikes and a few following bait hookups on the albacore. The largest of these fish weighed out at 28#. The seas were manageable, we were expecting higher winds. This evening the Shogun is running to a position where a few dozen albacore of the 15-20# class were landed this morning. Tomorrow we hope to put together an albacore bite to finish out this 3 day trip.

Today the Shogun crew made quick work of offloading from our 8 day, and cleaning up to receive our next group. We are out on a 3 day trip. Norman plans to take the Shogun offshore tomorrow to round up some tuna. There are a few boats from our fleet out looking and we'll do our part to map out the local banks. Our second day can be spent offshore or along the beach depending on what we find. Its good to be out fishing full time, we hope to find a good school that sticks to the boat and bites nails!
