We aboard the Shogun finished out the 8 day trip fishing a few inshore spots. A few hours of bottom fishing outside San Jeronimo, and then a couple of drifts at San Martin Island rounded out the day. All in all we had a very good trip, fishing started out slow but we finished strong. There were no small yellowtail, all were quality 30# fish. A few bluefin, two good mornings of small tuna and a couple of big grouper...and those reds today. A variety of species and techniques. Tomorrow Fathers Day, we are back out on a three day. Hope to see you on deck soon!

Today was our last full day of fishing for this 8 day trip and it was another day of variety. Waters south of Cedros were still on the chilly side so we kept rolling on up to the island this morning. We picked at those strong yellowtail at several locations throughout the day, and Cedros delivered with its grab bag of surprises. This week it was a handful of broomtails tight to the shore. We finished out the day with a great sunset bite on calico bass. The weather continued to treat us as kings here aboard the Shogun. Tomorrow Bruce is going to check a few inshore spots on our way home. Sunday is turn around day as we will be departing on a 3 day trip.

Today the rocks cooperated a bit more. With consistent current the yellows bit, and the size continues to average 30#. Several fish were lost to the bottom structure. Fishing close to the bottom, it only takes a short run and that 50# mono is caught up in the sharp rocks. The yellowfin also bit well early. Troll stops followed by a half dozen bait and jig fish put the tuna on the boat. This has to be one of the best trips for calm seas. We left Point Loma in bumpy south wind conditions and haven't seen wind above 10 kts since. Tomorrow the Shogun will be fishing near Cedros, and possibly offshore Saturday. Check the boat schedule as there are spaces available this summer and fall.

After a great night of fishing yellowtail at the bank, we moved back to the rocks early in the morning. We had some luck fishing yellowfin to 25# but the bite tapered off at noon. Larger fish were seen jumping but they didn't want to come to the boat. This afternoon we moved back to the bank and caught several yellowtail before dinner and a few throughout the night. Tomorrow morning we are going to give the tuna another shot and probably move up the coast. No wind or swell this far offshore is to good to be true!

Today we arrived at Alijos Rocks mid morning and quickly had a triple jig strike on tuna and skipjack. Jumpers and a lost tuna around 50# gave us hope, but a general lack of current kept fishing slow. Before sunset Bruce moved the Shogun out to Alijos Bank to look for yellows. He ran across a spot of mackerel, and we quickly made 2 tanks of "Yellowtail Candy". Upon anchoring up on the bank it was full speed on 30# yellows. We had some three hours of excellent yellowtail fishing. Soon everyone switched to dead bait as it resulted in an instant hookup, and reached the bottom quicker. It was a great fishing experience.

Tomorrow we'll see if there is an early bite on tuna, with the yellowtail fishing waiting for us in the afternoon. The trip is shaping up nicely.

After a slow morning looking for bluefin, Bruce put the Shogun on course for Alijos Rocks. We came across a kelp with some nice sized yellows, and managed to boat several. Every time Bruce called for lines up it was "Fresh One!". The weather continues to remain on the calm side, a good thing as there's no place to hide at the rocks.

The Shogun is back on the pond! After loading bait we left Point Loma on an 8 day trip in windy, mixed seas. There are many familiar faces aboard, lots of memories of trips past. There is still some swell this evening but the wind backed off all afternoon and its smooth right now. After some thought Capt Bruce is going to have us on the offshore fishing grounds tomorrow morning. There is some action for the sport boats on bluefin and smaller albacore, looks like we'll be fishing this area the next few days. The Shogun is now in full swing, the 2008 season has begun and we will be running every day this year, allowing a few family days for turkey and the like.
