The wind backed off some today, making for a fair day on the water. Once again bass fishing here at San Clemente Island was scratch fishing at best. The yellowtail made an appearance this morning and then again this afternoon. A few fish were hooked on surface iron, but sea lions and kelp stringers had the upper hand. Bottom fish filled out the count. The Shogun will be fishing distant offshore waters in the near future. Right now we are cruising down swell toward San Diego, and will be departing again next Saturday.

Once again the Shogun is fishing the waters of San Clemente Island. There isn't much swell, but the wind has been pretty stiff all day. Bass fishing is a bit slow today. Most were caught on fresh dead squid, followed by fin baits and jigs. We managed to boat some decent bottom fish and a stray bonito. The yellowtail haven't been spotted by any of the boats working the front side today, a down day for them. We are going to give it our best shot tomorrow, then its back to port Monday morning. Next Saturday its off to Alijos Rocks and points beyond on an 8 day trip.

Today the Shogun ventured offshore in calm seas once again. We were looking for kelps and found only a few holding yellowtail. Water temperatures are improving and we hope more fish move into our area soon. There were blind strikes on bonito throughout the day, with hookups on live bait at several stops. Next weekend we will be fishing San Clemente, and the following weekend we depart on an 8 day trip to Alijos Rocks. I wouldn't be surprised if we come across albacore on the way down. Great fishing is just around the corner.

I never would have thought we would be fishing in T-shirts today. The seas and wind calmed down for a great day on the water. The giant squid only bothered us for a while in the morning and all day long anglers aboard the Shogun put it to those bottom fish. It was almost exclusively big reds and big lings. A 16# lingcod took big fish honors with lots of 10 pounders hitting the deck as well. Today was easily our best day for bottom fish this season. Tomorrow the Shogun heads offshore paddy hopping looking for yellowtail. A few fish were caught today and we hope to find that lucky kelp tomorrow.

The Shogun is currently running south down the Baja coast on a three day trip this weekend. We left Point Loma in high wind and rain, but with little swell. Seas have calmed a bit this evening and conditions should improve through Sunday. Norm has us lined up for some bottom fishing tomorrow morning with a shot at yellowtail if possible. The waters tight to San Martin have been known to kick out a few halibut, so there are many options for Saturday. If weather permits a look offshore the following day might round out the trip. For now its motoring south under moon-lit seas,

Today we had decent current on the backside of the island and the bass bite picked up with the improved conditions. Winds were light and the sun came in and out of the clouds. We also picked up some decent bottom fish before noon. Once again Norm moved the Shogun to the front side for an afternoon shot at the yellowtail. There were a few spots up, one looked like a school of foaming tuna as the yellows churned up the surface. A handful of fish were hooked, all on jigs. Only one made it on deck today. The fish only show for a few hours mid-afternoon, then it was back to pyramid to finish out the day.

We have finished up our first day of fishing San Clemente this weekend. It was an effort to scratch out a decent catch but there is plenty of potential. Once again we had a few tanks of live squid to complement our sardine and anchovy mix. We fished tight to the kelp for bass, outside in deeper water for bottom fish, and late this afternoon the Shogun was chasing those early season yellows. The weather is a bit warmer than last week, but fluctuating sea temps have kept the bass bite down. Lingcod to 12# and a few nice reds came up from the bottom, but last weeks big bonito didn't show. Chasing yellowtail on the front side of the island this afternoon gave us a little hope for a larger game fish tomorrow. The yellows were up top for a while and a school feeding high and dry produced a 28# fish on surface iron. One can only hope that tomorrow there are more spots of biting yellows.

The fishing had its ups and downs today at San Clemente Island. The bass bite we've enjoyed lately didn't materialize with any real strength today. During our bottom fish drifts some bonito to 10# pulled some drag. It was an eye opener for those with little experience fighting a saltwater game fish. The wind kept things on the chilly side so in the afternoon we made some stops in Pyramid Cove, and the lee of the island. Some halibut at the east end kept things interesting. In the lee we were looking for yellowtail. We slid upon a spot of feeding fish, but they went down fast.
The fish are here, lets hope that a consistent bite develops in the weeks to come. Next weekend the Shogun will once again be fishing Clemente with a group sponsored by 976-Tuna. With the sea temp slowly creeping up there are bound to be some willing yellows this month.
